Victoria Day

바베큐만 밖에서 해서 집안으로 들고와 먹었다. –;;

Victoria Day

This month’s 19th is Victoria day.
Do you know what is the day?
I want to give some information about Victoria day.
The day is a holiday that celebrates Queen Victoria.
Her birthday is 24 May 1819. So, it is assigned 24 May in every year.
But, if the day is Sunday, it is postponed to 25th.
In Canada, it is designated as the Monday before 25th of May in 1952 and was permanently provided as Queen’s birthday in 1957.
During the 1900s, it used to be called Empire Day and then it changed to Commonwealth Day. Now Canadians call it Victoria Day.

Canada and England

In 1593, a frenchman Jacques Cartier gave Canada a name.
After France was defeated with Queen Anna in 1713, it was transfered to England.
The first Parliament of the new Dominion was established in 1867, and then the Statute of Westminster achieved in 1931.
Statute of Westminster removed the legislative authority of Parliament in the United Kingdom over the Dominions (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Newfoundland), with the following exception: As the Canadian delegation had been unable to settle on an amending formula, the existing scheme (i.e. a simple British law, subject to amendment by the U.K.) was retained.
British North America Act in 1949 gave the Parliament of Canada limited powers to amend the Constitution of Canada.
Canada Act, 1982
Last Act of the United Kingdom Parliament containing the English and French versions of the Constitution Act, 1982
>From that time on, the United Kingdom Parliament relinquishes the power to affect any Canadian laws, including the Constitution.

About Queen Victoria

Her farther is Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, a son of King George III

Victoria, who was queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and empress of India, was born in 1819. She was only 18 when she took over the throne in 1837 after her uncle George IV died. She ruled until her death in 1901, then her son Edward the VII became the King of England.

Victoria, born May 24, 1819, was the daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn and Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Edward died when Victoria was but eight months old, upon which her mother enacted a strict regimen that, shunned the courts of Victoria’s uncles, George IV and William IV. She married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 1840; the union produced four sons and five daughters. She died at eighty-one years of age on January 22, 1901, after a reign of sixty-three years.
