100th entry.

My First Presentation.

Hi. Today, I will introduce you to the building that is called ‘CheomSeongDae’.

CheomSeongDae is the oldest place to watch and measure stars in Asia.

It’s an ancient construction built at 647.
This is the treasure of Shilla.
The ancient Korea was divided into 3 Kingdoms.
Shilla is a Kingdom of those.
It’s built by ‘A Bi Ji’ who is a man from another Kingdom, called Backjae.

It looks like a cylinder that is narrow at top, and wider at bottom.
Moreover, there are square of stones at the top and the bottom .
Its height is about 9m.
It consists of 362 stones. 362 means days of a year at lunar calendar.
The center of the building has a square window to view stars.
It has not a stair. It is said that people climbed to the window using a ladder.
The window faces South.
So the top and the bottom stones were arranged in the same line with the window direction.

Most of scholars insist ‘CheomSeongDae’ is a telescope to observe stars. But another viewpoint exists.
For example, it is a table which serves a gift to God. As similar as another ancient country, the prayer usually asks for a good agriculture of that year.
Anyway, its most important function is a place to watch and measure stars.

It is located in Korea, Kyung-Buk province, Kyung-Ju city, In-Wang dong, 839-1.

If you travel to Korea, I recommend you to visit CheomSeongDae.
You might feel that it’s very interesting and mysterious.
